Director’s Note:
Narcolepsy was born from my lifelong love of psychological horror films and darker dramas that explored intricate and cerebral themes of mental illness, nightmare and dream logic, surreal visuals and a deep reverence for the Nightmare on Elm Street franchise and Donnie Darko films. I became increasingly intrigued by the sleep disorder known as Narcolepsy when I nearly fell asleep in a morning college film class I had at the time. It became an ever growing fascination with the condition and upon further research and anecdotes, I wanted to explore the condition, while also telling a dark tale about a young man’s deteriorating mental condition, which was also heavily inspired by experiencing my own intense bout of depression and anxiety a few months before I wrote the script and we shot the film. This film was always meant to raise awareness for mental health and advocate for more discussions and resources around the topic.
